Sometimes, you’re happy with a video but not its audio track. In such cases, you can remove the existing audio and add a new voice-over, narration, or background music. The good news? You don’t need a paid video editor—VLC Media Player, a free and open-source tool, can do it.
In a previous guide, we showed how to remove audio from a video using VLC. This tutorial shows how to attach audio to a video using the same tool.
Introducing VLC Media Player
VLC Media Player is a free, open-source, portable, and cross-platform media player and streaming server. It works on:
- Windows, Mac OS, Linux, Unix
- iOS and Android
If you don’t already have it, you can download VLC from the official website.
Step 1: Open VLC and Import Your Video
- Launch VLC Media Player on your computer. This demo uses VLC for Windows.
- Click Media in the top menu, then select Open Multiple Files…
- In the Open Media window, click + Add in the File Selection section and select the video you want to edit.
Step 2: Add an Audio Track
- Check Show more options.
- Tick Play another media synchronously.
- Click Browse… next to the Extra media box and select the audio file you want to add.
Step 3: Convert and Save the Video
- Click the Play dropdown menu at the bottom-right corner and select Convert.
- In the Convert window, click Browse under the Destination section.
- Choose where to save your new video and give it a name.
- Click Start to attach the audio to the video.
⚠️ Depending on the video size, this process may take a few minutes.
Step 4: Play Your New Video
Once VLC completes the process:
- Open the destination folder you selected.
- Play the video to ensure the new audio is correctly added.
Tips
- Make sure the audio file matches the length of the video, or VLC will loop or cut it depending on settings.
- You can use formats like MP3, WAV, or AAC for the audio track.
- VLC allows you to preview the video with the new audio before saving by using the Play button in the Open Media window.
This method is free, fast, and effective, perfect for adding voice-overs, narration, or music to any video without needing expensive editing software.
